Paul Kasperitis (he/they) is a percussionist, composer, and improviser living in Houston, Texas.
Paul is the co-founder and operations coordinator of The Magpie Parliament Society, an improvisation-oriented art collective, which they facilitate with Houston artist Mark Medina. The Magpie Parliament Society’s work focuses on collaborative, interdisciplinary projects that explore the spaces between composition, design, and improvisation. The Magpie Parliament Society started in 2019 with a series of livestreamed improvisation sessions, and since then has spent time fostering a community of artists who share a belief in collaborative art-making, and its power to enable communication and understanding.”
Holding a Bachelor of Music in composition and percussion performance from the Moores School of Music at the University of Houston, they studied composition with David Ashley White and percussion with Alec Warren and Blake Wilkins. As a student, he performed frequently, notably in the university’s symphony and opera orchestras, the wind ensemble, and the nationally recognized Moores School Percussion Ensemble, directed by Blake Wilkins. He also served as the percussionist in the AURA Contemporary Ensemble directed by Rob Smith, where he had the chance to perform in “Colony,” an evening-length choreo-musical theater work in collaboration with the critically acclaimed Psophonia Dance Company, directed by Sophia Torres.
